Weekly Target Skills:

-Practice the four types of sentences.

-Practice author's purpose. 

-Practice infelectional endings -ed and -ing.

-Practice theme. 

-Practice genres - informational text, fiction, non-fiction, biography, realistic fiction.  

-Practice sequence of events, main idea, and key details of a story.

Home reinforcement:

​

Types of sentences: 

1. Declarative - makes a statement and ends in a period (.). 

2. Interrogative - asks a question and ends in a question mark (?).

3. Exclamatory - expresses a strong feeling and ends in an exclamation point (!). 

4. Imperative - gives a command and usually ends in a period (.). 

​

Adverbs that tell how:

Adverbs describe the verb. Adverbs that tell how usually end in -ly. 

Examples: 

  • Abruptly

  • Endlessly

  • Firmly

  • Delightfully

  • Quickly

  • Lightly

  • Loudly

  • Slowly 

 

 

Compound Words:

Two complete words that can be put together to form a new word.

Prefixed and suffixed words are NOT compound words (unwrap, grateful).

Examples of compound words: goldfish, rainbow, fingernails, toothbrush, sunflower, butterfly, cowboy.

Inflectional Endings -ed and -ing: 

When adding ING and ED to words that end with an E, the e must be dropped.

Example: scrape

Vocabulary:

​

​ANTHEM- A formal song of loyalty, praise, or happiness.

Word As Used in Magazine: Our anthem is “The Star Spangled Banner.” (p. 6)

 

COLONY- A land ruled by another country.

Word As Used in Magazine: A colony is a place that belongs to a country that is far away. (p. 13)
